DKM SCHARNHORST by Wilfried van de Vel 1/350
UNTERNEHMEN CERBERUS on 12.02.1942 - better known as the Channel Dash. This operation was the return to Germany of the three ships Gneisenau, Prinz Eugen and Scharnhorst.
Going through the English Channel placed the ships under concentrated air attack but no heavy ships would be encountered.
The Luftwaffe could provide fighter cover from start to finish.
So it was deemed that steaming through the Channel at high speed presented less risk.
The Scharnhorst was the flagship of Admiral Ciliax, but at 15.31 she was hit by an un-swept mine.
The Destroyer Z29 was ordered alongside Scharnhorst to remove the Admiral and his staff.
But on 13.02.1942 the ship arrived safely at Kiel.
By “Unternehmen Cerberus“ the DKM Scharnhorst was painted in Mottled Camouflage.
